The Allgäu Alps, on the other hand, stretch across southern Bavaria and Tyrol. This mountain range is known for its gentler peaks and wide alpine meadows.
It is also home to numerous idyllic mountain lakes such as Sieglsee, Alpsee and Plansee, which are fed by the surrounding mountains. The highest peaks in the Allgäu Alps are the Große Krottenkopf (2,656m) and the Hochvogel (2,592m). Both peaks can be hiked from the Lech Valley.
The geology of this region is characterized by the deposits of the Tethys Sea, which existed here millions of years ago. Alpine farming has been an important industry here for centuries and shapes the cultural landscape of the region.
